Ik heb Els Lemaire ontmoet in haar beginperiode bij de Leidse Rechtenfaculteit en was onder de indruk van haar bijdrage. Dankzij haar uitstekende en brede beheersing van het veld van internationale werving, haar ervaring, analytisch vermogen en haar brede netwerk wist ze op korte termijn een succesvolle en passende recruitment visie te ontwikkelen én te implementeren. Daarbij kiest ze niet voor een ‘onze size fits all’ benadering, maar legt de verbinding met de bredere instellingsvisie en de onderwijsinhoudelijke keuzes. Onder haar leiding werden de Leidse Advanced LLM’s buitengewoon succesvol in het aantrekken van talent en werd de eerste internationale accreditatie een feit. Vanwege haar kwaliteiten heb ik Els later uitgenodigd om voor de internationale Masterprogramma’s van de Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen een strategische marketing visie te ontwikkelen.
Els is gezegend met een groot gevoel voor humor, stressbestendigheid en een innemende persoonlijkheid die met iedereen, van hoog tot laag, vruchtbare werkrelaties weet op te bouwen. Als teamleider weet ze te motiveren, creëert ze een prettige werkomgeving en betoont ze zich zowel menselijk als resultaatgericht. Els zoekt de oplossing niet in papieren tijgers en een enorme groei van het marketingbudget, maar komt met duurzaam werkende, passende en betaalbare oplossingen. Ik kan haar van harte aanbevelen.

Min of meer aan het begin van mijn periode als decaan van de Leidse rechtenfaculteit kwam Els Lemaire uit de blauwe hemel vallen. De strategie van de faculteit was gericht op internationalisering van ons onderwijs. Die strategie was niet zonder risico. De bestaande internationale programma’s waren van hoge kwaliteit, maar ook verliesgevend en zonder veel onderlinge samenhang. Dat moest echt anders. De komst van Els bleek een markant moment in die strategie. Met haar enorme kennis van het wereldwijde internationale onderwijs, haar betrokken en vrolijke manier van leidinggeven aan haar voortreffelijke team, met haar gemakkelijke en tegelijkertijd respectvolle omgang met onze (veeleisende) hoogleraren, én met haar enorme inzet, maakte Els van de facultaire internationalisering in enkele jaren tijd een groot succes. Ook op beleidsmatig niveau, waarin zij rechtstreeks aan de decaan adviseerde, bleek zij zeer sterk. Haar marketingplannen zullen zonder twijfel door de faculteit worden gekoesterd.
Het vertrek van Els uit Leiden valt vrijwel samen met mijn vertrek als decaan. Alle internationale indicatoren laten zien dat de Leidse faculteit er thans heel anders voor staat dan enkele jaren geleden. Onze samenwerking zal ik zeer missen.

There are people who carry on problems, and people who solve problems. I can say with great admiration that Els Lemaire belongs most definitively to the most outstanding example of the second type. From my first day in Leiden, when I took over the Advanced LL.M. in Public International Law she was always forward-looking and able to find a constructive solution to problems. She always did so with creativity, unique optimism and good spirit. This is a great gift – and a skill that made us move forward.
Els has shown that formal rules are important for management, but that they must be applied and interpreted in a way that solves problems, meets human interests and allows space for progress and development. Even in difficult situations, when the level of excitement rose, Els kept a smile – more than most of us. This gave us ‘positive’ energy. I then understood more than ever the deep happiness and appreciation of our American partners, whose eyes brightened up like ‘stars’ when they first heard that Els would be working with us on further cooperation. I could give many examples of this positive attitude in our daily experiences, ranging from the distribution of LEXS scholarships to conversations with some of our more ‘special’ students or the re-accreditation process.
Els’s spirit and ability to solve problems is a real gift. It is this creativity, combined with her wisdom and a ‘human touch’ to management which brought our programmes further to where they are now. Thank you Els – you are a treasure!

I was a Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Sussex from 2000-2005 with a particular responsibility for all aspects of student recruitment, including the recruitment of international students.
During my time in this position I worked closely with Els Lemaire who was a Senior International Liasison Officer at the time. Els was passionate about ‘internationalising’ the University of Sussex in a way that went way beyond simply recruiting overseas students to our campus.
Els was proactive in developing student and faculty exchanges, and in seeking to secure genuine partnerships with overseas universities. It is never easy to ‘do’ these things, the more so in the face of much competition from other universities, but Els was clear as to what she wanted to achieve and she had the energy to push matters through to successful conclusions. Els is very knowledgeable about the whole field of international higher education; she has much experience in marketing; and she has excellent presentation skills and is very familiar with running recruitment events. Els was a real asset to the efforts of the University of Sussex to secure a strong position in the field of international education and I would have no hesitation in using her again or in recommending her to others for work in this field.

During her time at the University of Sussex Els significantly drove forward the internationalisation strategy in a wide range of areas. Her expertise covered the management of exchange programmes in Europe, North and South America, and the development and implementation of recruitment plans of fee-paying students from Asia, North and South America. She also created new and innovative academic programmes, supported international students at the University and developed alumni relations.
Els is very organised, with excellent communication and people skills; she proved an excellent ambassador for the University and was highly regarded by academic and administrative colleagues throughout the institution.

Ms Els Lemaire is a true professional.
